Bronx Bakes for Body Armor

Bake Sale for Body Armor

On Wednesday, May 7th, The Bronx Comprehensive Services Center hosted a ‘Bake Sale for Body Armor’. This was a campaign dedicated to saving the lives of our soldiers by raising funds to purchase body armor, medical supplies and other items that promote their health and welfare.

The staff, administration and participants of the Bronx center were all actively involved in this successful event.  Consumers had fun purchasing and baking delicious desserts, as well as handing out flyers in the community advertising the bake sale.  Families, residences, and other Lifespire programs were also invited to this event.

There was a long line of customers throughout the day, where they were offered choices of dessert toppings and cups of milk to go with the sweets.  Merchants from the community donated items as well as money donations for the campaign.

Bake Sales for Body Armor was formed in response to a Department of Defense Study that showed that 74 out of 93 Marines killed between March 2003 and June 2005 could have been saved by side protecting body armor that was not being provided for our troops. After the plan to hold bake sales to purchase the armor ran in Stars and Stripes, the army began sending large shipments of the much needed armor to troops in Iraq. While the urgent need for body armor seems to have passed, there are still unmet needs in Iraq including medical supplies and communications gear. Bake Sales for Body Armor will supply as much equipment as possible for soldiers deployed around the world.

The center raised $284 for the campaign. Barbara Flores, Facility Director, stated, “I am so impressed by the turn out and by the support of the community.”  If you would like more information on the Bake Sales at Lifespire, please contact Barbara at 718-892-7765.  If you would like more information or would like to donate to Bake Sales for Body Armor, please go to www.bakesalesforbodyarmor.org

Be on the lookout for flyers for the dates of the upcoming bake sales…perhaps even a “mobile” bake sale!
