Lifespire’s Annual Years of Service Luncheon was held on Thursday, May 22, 2008, at Antun’s in Queens Village, New York. The Annual Years of Service Luncheon honors Lifespire employees who have provided thirty, twenty-five, twenty, fifteen and ten years of service to Lifespire. On May 22nd, Lifespire honored this extraordinary individual with 30 years of tireless devotion, commitment, loyalty and service to the Lifespire family – Tom McAlvanah.
Tom McAlvanah began his career in the field of developmental disabilities with Lifespire, then ACRMD in 1977 as a direct care staff in a residence for mentally retarded adults in Queens. He has held various positions with increasing responsibilities throughout his years at Lifespire including Residence Manager, Director of Residential Services, Chief Operating Officer and currently as Executive Vice President.
Throughout his career, Tom has been well known for his family values, strong work ethic and GREAT humor. He is also known for his love and compassion for the consumers and for going above and beyond for what is morally the right thing to do. “I am most proud of my participation with all of the staff at Lifespire for their daily commitment and assistance to our consumers. I believe that every person in the organization is here to carry out the mission of human and civil rights for all people with developmental disabilities.” said Tom.
Tom received his education at Queens College and York College and holds a professional degree as a Licensed Master of Social Work (LMSW) from Hunter College (CUNY). He also is a member of numerous advocacy and trade association agencies, has chaired numerous committees and is a member of the Board of Directors for the InterAgency Council (IAC) and the New York State Association of Community and Residential Agencies (NYSACRA) where he serves as President of the Board. He is also President of the Bronx Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities Council, a networking and advocacy association serving citizens with disabilities in the Bronx. Tom lives in Westchester with his wife and two children.
Tom brings to Lifespire a very unique leadership and management style where he gives a new meaning to “hands on.” He hasn’t forgotten his beginnings in the field! How could he when he’s still in the field? Tom keeps consistent contact with the consumers and lights up when he sees them… quite amazingly; Tom has first-name familiarity with so many of our consumers!
Tom’s charismatic personality along with his uncanny relationship building skills has earned him invaluable friendships with his team and with his colleagues. He continuously demonstrates respect, honesty, trust and loyalty in everything he does. He is truly an inspirational hero and role model for all. With a heart full of love, excellence, dignity, and endurance, Tom teaches others the incredible gratification and privilege of serving. He has sacrificially employed his talent and intellect in distinguished and endless service to the Lifespire family.
We at Lifespire salute Mr. McAlvanah for thirty years of service, commitment, dedication and love.
